FAQs

Here, we have collected a number of questions frequently asked by those interested in Occupational Therapy Services.

Why would a child receive occupational therapy?

Many people are surprised to hear that children receive occupational therapy services because the term “occupation” is usually associated with a job or job training.  However, “occupation” in occupational therapy has a much broader context.  It encompasses all the activities that occupy people’s time and give meaning to their daily lives.  Occupational Therapy specializes in assisting people with overcoming disabilities, impairments, or handicaps so they can function and perform activities that they deem important.  For children, some of these activities can be as simple as being able to use utensils, catch a ball, or complete self-care tasks such as buttoning a shirt.  Pediatric Occupational Therapy is designed to seem like play to a child, but in reality it is a scientific and medical approach to providing therapy that will help children overcome deficiencies and improve their lives.

Who can benefit from pediatric OT services?

Children of all ages who are experiencing developmental delays that impact their ability to function and perform.

D.O.T.S. for Kids provides services for a wide range of clients and tailors the treatment plans to meet their individual needs.  Occupational Therapy can assist children with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Delay, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Sensory Integration Dysfunction, motor-coordination impairments, emotional/behavior disorders, and learning disabilities.

Please contact us and one of our therapists will contact you directly to discuss whether an occupational therapy evaluation would be beneficial for your child.

We know our child needs occupational therapy. Can we skip the evaluation, and start therapy?

D. O. T. S. policy is for every child to have a formal evaluation before starting therapy; it is a critical part of our comprehensive treatment plan. Without the evaluation, the therapist is unable to focus on the child’s specific deficit and create a plan of action that will be effective.

If your child already receives OT services, we do accept evaluations conducted by other clinics/therapists.  On a case-by-case basis we may waive the requirement for an evaluation.  However, this is rare and is usually only waived when a child is too young or their developmental delays are so severe that a formal evaluation and standardized testing is impossible.

Are physician’s orders required for occupational therapy?

While physician’s orders are not required under Texas law, many insurance companies require physician’s orders as documentation that the services received are necessary and beneficial to the patient. As a form of "good" practice we maintain orders on all of our clients, and will request physician’s orders for treatment after the completion of the intial evaluation.

What are the rates for therapy services?

Sensory Motor Evaluation: $450.00
Handwriting Evaluation: $275.00
Re-Evaluation: $275.00
Individual Treatment Session(1 hr): $102.00

Do you accept insurance?

We accept insurance and file claims as an out of network provider. Depending on your individual plan the cost for our out of network services may be comparable to your out of pocket costs for network services. Additionally, if your plan does not allow for out of network service you may be able to obtain an exemption from the insurance company if you cannot find a network pediatric OT provider. Insurance coverage for pediatric therapy is a complicated issue, please call us for a more detailed discussion.
